Why are periods considered unholy?
In the Torah (Leviticus 15:19-30), a menstruating female is considered ritually unclean – “anyone who touches her will be unclean until evening” (New International Version). Touching a menstruating female, touching an object she had sat on or lain on, or having intercourse with her also makes a person ritually unclean.
What condition did the woman with the issue of blood have?
Some scholars view it as menorrhagia; others as haemorrhoids. Because of the continual bleeding, the woman would have been continually regarded in Jewish law as a niddah or menstruating woman, and so ceremonially unclean. In order to be regarded as clean, the flow of blood would need to stop for at least 7 days.
